While Project Controls is considered a subset of Project Management with specialized skillsets, even today, in most organizations, Project Controls is still not fully acknowledged as an independent function with its own role in projects.
There is no doubt that Project Controls is crucial to the project’s success. However, a definite gap exists between project controls and project management that needs to be addressed to ensure projects run full steam ahead with maximum efficiency.
The gap initiates from the dual role of Project Controls. Firstly, Project Controls is a support service to the project management team by planning the project, establishing processes for monitoring performance, and setting the right benchmarks for analysis in place. Secondly, Project Controls double up as an auditing service by monitoring the status and performance of the project and providing objective and transparent assessment to the project team when the project starts going off track.
Considering the somewhat conflicting auditing and supporting roles that project controls play in projects, it’s essential to balance both of these services. Any tension between the two can create friction and reduce the efficiency of the team and the project.
For Project Controls to achieve and fulfill its role at best, Project Managers need to recognize Project Control Services as a support system for the project. However, when Project Controls Services are managed by a different department and not directly by the Project Manager or the Project Management Team, they may perceive it as a threat rather than a support.
So, how can the Project Controls team walk the line between auditing the project to provide objective feedback and supporting the project manager simultaneously?
How can we bridge the gap between project management and project controls?
How can we establish a coherent and collaborative environment for the project controls services and project management to work hand-in-hand and deliver successful projects?
How can we build robust project controls in an organization that the project management team admires?
